We stayed one more night in Florida after our busy day with the various animals, we woke ready to continue to drive north west. At this point in Florida we change over into the Central Standard Time putting us six hours behind the UK. It was great for us to gain the extra hour, handy for the travelling.
We carried on driving making it over the state line to Alabama it was late but pretty spectacular! There are basically no street lights meaning you can see every star in the sky, it was stunning! It felt great to be on the road again. We checked in planning to spend the time in bed with the extra hour that we’d gained.
A new day and new adventures dawn! Driving through alabama is really quite something. The dirt here is a bright reddy orange colour and leads to huge sections of stunning embankments where the colours really bring the roadside alive.
This morning we headed to Talladega National Park, another bunch of windy up mountain roads. The drive to the top was spectacular, although this time I was left feeling a little green!
We had already checked out the relevant information before we came and knew that at this time of year the park only opens on certain days and closes early as it is still the ‘winter’ season, something easily forgotten, with Florida’s 25c heat and by fact that it is actually a boiling 20c today in Alabama, (hotter than Florida at the moment).
We didn’t make it up in time before it shut, but we feel like Alabama has already had so much to offer. The beautiful scenic drive through (rather ignorantly I had imagined never ending fields of crops) reminded us a bit of West Virginia, if it hadn’t had the snow. I don’t feel bad when we don’t get to do an activity, this is after all a road trip and sometimes the road is all we need to find.
